Community Forum: Effective Strategies to Oppose Inappropriate Developments 24 April 2010

Hosted by UQ Greens and West Brisbane Greens, at Social Sciences and Humanities Library conference room, University of Queensland. The conference room is in the lower level of the library. There is plentiful free parking on the campus on weekends, as well as options of using a bus, bicycle or City Cat to get to there.

2:30-4:30pm

This forum aims to bring together various community groups who have had experience of or are facing threats of inappropriate development. Speakers include:

  • Larissa Waters – an experienced environmental lawyer with considerable experience of opposing inappropriate development applications, and lead Queensland Greens senate candidate for the upcoming federal election
  • Barry O’Sullivan – a member of the Taringa Neighbourhood Group, which successfully opposed a high-rise development in Taringa

Some of the areas of concern I have picked up from communities include:

  • Kenmore bypass – possibly stopped for now because the state government is running out of money, but that is not a sure thing
  • Karana Waters – a proposal to turn the Karana Downs golf course into housing
  • Gap Creek Road – actual development appears to be at odds with the stated aim of keeping it as a wildlife-friendly forest road

If you have something to add, or would like to learn from experienced campaigners, we welcome your participation. For more information, contact me by email. You can also download a flier with more details. Please sign up at the event’s Facebook page if planning to attend.

ETS Forum 13 October 2009, University of Queensland, St Lucia

This forum covers the government’s proposed emissions trading scheme (aka carbon pollution reduction scheme or CPRS), alternatives and how the government’s proposal will play out internationally.

Speakers
Dr Jane O’Sullivan: The merits of a carbon tax, more specifically a consumption-based tax rather than a production-based tax. That is, the cost of embodied emissions is added to the product like the GST, not at the point of manufacture. She will address the advantages like price stability, administrative ease and the incentives for individuals to change their purchasing behaviour.

Dr Martin Weber, Lecturer in International Relations: Copenhagen and the ETS: the diplomatic ramifications of Australian policy for the Copenhagen summit, especially whether our position could help or hinder a positive outcome.

Professor John Quiggin: Will the current proposed ETS be effective? Is the current ETS compromised by the “free permits” for large polluters? Does the current proposed scheme set 2020 reduction targets which are too low to achieve our 2050 goals? Will the proposed scheme be more stable in price than the EU or North-West US scheme? Will there be sufficient reinvestment of the proceeds from permits into emissions reduction measures?

This event is the first for the new UQ Greens club, and looks pretty good. Please arrive by 6pm for a 6:15 start at building 24, room S304.
